Chiropractic Care Overview

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractor David Peyton SandtonThe term “chiropractic” combines the Greek words cheir (hand) and praxis (practice) to describe a treatment done by hand. Hands-on therapy—especially adjustment of the spine—is central to chiropractic care. Chiropractic is based on the principle that the relationship between the body’s structure (primarily that of the spine) and its function (as coordinated by the nervous system) affects health. The adjustment or manipulation is a core treatment in chiropractic care, but it is not synonymous with chiropractic. Chiropractors commonly use other treatments in addition to spinal manipulation (click here to learn more about our treatment approach).

Chiropractic is Holistic

By harnessing the body’s self-healing properties, “chiropractic care is used most often to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, and headaches. Chiropractors practice a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment. Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and are also trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, as well as to provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counseling” (ACA, 2013). Being trained to “first do no harm” chiropractors are able to co-manage conditions with other practitioners if complex, or refer if the condition is outside their scope.  Need to know if chiropractic can help care for you and your specific problem?  Click here to find out.

Chiropractic in South Africa

Dr David Peyton, the chiropractor at Sandton Health Centre was trained at the University of Johannesburg for six years (click here to read David’s profile and click here to read about educational standards).  Chiropractors are required to continue to update their knowledge and attend vital chiropractic seminars.  To practice legally as a chiropractor in South Africa, chiropractors are required to be registered with the Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa (AHPCSA).  The Chiropractic Association of South Africa (CASA) is the professional body representing over 90% of registered chiropractors in South Africa.  The Board of Health Funders (BHF) is the representative organisation for medical schemes in Southern Africa. Practitioners registered with the BHF obtain a practice number which enables you as a patient to submit claims for treatment to your medical aid.   David is registered with the AHPCSA (#A11078), CASA (#0775) and the BHF (#0436186).  Click here to read more about South African chiropractic international accreditation and professional bodies.
