Safety of Chiropractic

“Do No Harm”

Chiropractors have been labeled quacks & the safety of their treatment questioned.  On the contrary, a pillar in the philosophy of chiropractic emphasizes the built-in, drug-free, surgery-free, self-healing properties of the body.  Being primary-contact practitioners, chiropractors are equipped to diagnose and treat where safe, co-manage with other practitioners if complex, or refer if the condition is outside their scope.  The first aim of every chiropractor adhering to the Hippocratic Oath is to “first do no harm.”

Chiropractic Education

Chiropractors in South Africa are required to complete a rigorous Masters degree which places them in a position to safely diagnose and handle a wide array of conditions.  Read more about chiropractic education in South Africa here.

Safety of the Chiropractic Adjustment

Chiropractic treatment, “done by hand” consists of highly-skilled manipulative techniques often referred to as adjustments (for more information, click here).  Several characteristics of the adjustment make it safe:

  • Adjustments are gentle – they are specifically defined as “lower power” thrusts.  The movies portray an unrealistic scenario
  • Adjustments are specific – they are directed at a specific joint, in a specific direction
  • Adjustments work with the body – they don’t force the joints or muscles to go beyond what is anatomically possible
  • Adjustments don’t cause damage – joints are not rammed together and ligaments do not snap – a gas bubble forms inside the joint causing a “clicking” sound
  • Adjustments restore normal function
